Remembering His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami on his 79th Vyasa Puja Day
Dear Assembled Vaisnavas,
Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada! All glories His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami Maharaja, As I compose these words, I find myself continually inspired and uplifted by Bhakti Charu Swami Maharaj’s enduring legacy.
Maharaja has departed from this world and returned to the loving embrace of our revered Srila Prabhupada and Lord Sri Krishna. While his loss is profound, the legacy he leaves behind is immeasurable. As I reflect on his life, my heart is filled with deep gratitude and admiration for his unparalleled dedication, humility, and unwavering love for Srila Prabhupada and ISKCON.
Maharaja exemplified what it truly means to be a devoted servant of Srila Prabhupada. From the moment he took shelter of His Divine Grace, he devoted his entire life to the service of ISKCON. He was not just a disciple of Srila Prabhupada in name but in action, embodying the very essence of living and breathing for the mission of spreading Krishna consciousness. His dedication to preserving Srila Prabhupada’s legacy, and his contributions to the global Krishna consciousness movement are unparalleled.
We both had the great fortune of serving together in Srila Prabhupada’s mission, and I witnessed Maharaja’s significant commitment and heartfelt sincerity. He was always determined to advance Srila Prabhupada’s vision, not for personal gain or recognition, but out of pure devotion and love, as seen with the Srila Prabhupada Memorial Festival. His monumental work in translating Srila Prabhupada’s books into Bengali ensured that Krishna’s message could reach millions more. His exquisite and devotional filmmaking, including the production of “Abhay Charan,” continues to be a testament of his desire to glorify Srila Prabhupada in every possible way. Maharaja spared no effort in his quest to spread Krishna consciousness with excellence and devotion.
Bhakti Charu Swami Maharaja was an exceptional leader who remained intimately connected with the devotees. His gentle and caring nature touched the hearts of everyone he met. His kindness, humility, and personal warmth made each person feel valued and loved. Maharaja embodied the essence of Vaisnava seva, always going out of his way to uplift and support others. He was a refuge for many devotees around the world, and his loving care will be remembered and missed by innumerable souls.
Together, we faced many challenges in our collective service to ISKCON, but Maharaja’s unwavering faith and determination always inspired me. He was a warrior in Srila Prabhupada’s army, wielding weapons of love, compassion, and wisdom. His insightful leadership during difficult times, including his invaluable role on the GBC, was a guiding light for the entire movement.
Maharaja’s life was a testament to continuous service. Whether leading kirtanas, delivering profound classes, guiding devotees, or managing large projects, he was always focused on how to better serve Srila Prabhupada and ISKCON. His worldwide efforts to establish projects, including the grand temple in Ujjain, stand as a crowning jewel of his service—a temple that will endure for generations as a monument to his devotion.
As we honor his memory, let us draw inspiration from his exemplary life, and aspire to follow in his noble footsteps. Bhakti Charu Swami Maharaja lived for Srila Prabhupada, and he departed this world while in the service of His Divine Grace. His life was a beacon of perfection, and although his departure is painful and leaves a huge void in our hearts, Bhakti Charu Swami’s life will remain forever celebrated for its glory and magnificence.
